It is just about time for our family's annual trip to Yellowstone. I am as excited as ever to be going home. Our goal this year is to try our best to see for the first time in our lives the great bear - Grizzly. We have put a lot of time into trying to find the best areas to visit for sighting grizzlies. Another remote goal was to try to see the wolves that were just reintroduced and turned loose - that would be a dream come true!

We arrived at Roosevelt Lodge on Saturday, 17 Jun 1995. We unpacked and headed out into the park. This trip went even better than I had expected. The park was as fantastic as ever, the weather was cooler than usual, with sporadic moisture. We accomplished all the goals we had set out to do and then some. On the first Saturday, we saw three grizzly bears, a sow and two cubs. This was the first time in the past five years that I or any of my family were able to see grizzly bears. The next morning, I got up at 4:30 am and went out in search of the wolves. At approximately 6:00 am the Crystal Spring pack appeared, or most of the pack. The alpha male and female and two yearling pups came to play. There are six wolves in this pack, the other two teenagers were off doing their own thing. The wolves ran and played, chased some elk and were chased by the elk for about two hours right in front of us. We watched from a far with spotting scopes so as to have as little impact on this new addition to the wildlife family of Yellowstone. It was fantastic, to say I was excited would be a great understatement.

I had accomplished both my goals in the first two days in seeing the wolves and the grizzlies. We saw a total of four wolves, five grizzlies and two black bears, plus most of the normal Yellowstone wildlife. The one grizzly was about 100 yards off the road as we drove down Lamar Valley. I have some nice video of it. What a thrill, I was fairly sure that we had a better than average chance to see a grizzly or two, but the seeing the wolves was beyond my fondest expectations - fantastic! If you are interested in the location of the bear and wolf sightings, send me an email and I'll give you all the details.
