Thursday - 30 May

I left work after breakfast and found the nesting pair of Trumpeter Swans in Island Park on my way up. Dunraven Pass was closed so went thru Mammoth on my way up. Lots of photographers still at the fox den at the Yellowstone Picnic Area. A badger had come by and the female fox got the two kits out and re-dug a new den. She forced the badger into the original den and surprising kept it there for two days. Unfortunately a couple of days later both foxes went hunting and the badger emerged and found the new den and killed both fox kits. At 10:00 a.m. I found a courting pair of grizzlies across the lake at Swan Lake Flats. At 1:20 p.m. I spotted a black bear in the bowl south and west of the Institute looking from Footbridge Pullout. At 3:30 p.m. I found a bear jam north of Soda Butte Middle pullout with a grizzly sleeping behind a tree. After an hour she got up to reveal three COY'S (cubs of the year). At 5:00 p.m. we watched a black bear sow with a brown yearling cub south of Picnic Pullout. At 5:30 p.m. I spotted a white faced grizzly sow with a two year old cub south of Dorothy's Pullout. At 7:30 p.m. we watched a black bear south of Picnic. At 8:20 p.m. we had a gray wolf on Dead Puppy Hill. At 8:30 p.m. we watched a black wolf in Cache Creek viewed from the Confluence. At 8:35 p.m. I found a grizzly sow with two yearlings in K Meadow.

Friday - 31 May

36 degrees near Silver Gate (I stayed there this entire trip) in the morning warming to 48 degrees. I saw a moose at Round Prairie on the way into the valley this morning. At 6:45 a.m. I spotted a large grizzly crossed the road near the gravel pullout down Slough Creek road. At 7:40 a.m. I found a grizzly sow with two yearlings in K Meadow. At 8:05 a.m. Wayne from Washington and Laurie from Montana found a grizzly sow with two COY'S north and west of Midpoint Pullout. Jean and Margaret found me my first mountain goat kid above Pebble Creek Campground this morning. At 12:30 p.m. we watched a large cinnamon black bear in Round Prairie. At 1:10 p.m. we had a large grizzly in K-2 Meadow (south of K Meadow). At 2:00 p.m. I found a black and a gray (probably 890M and 869F of the Junction Butte pack) playing in the snow bank just above Ski Slope (I think the only wolves found today in the Northern Range). At 2:10 p.m. we had a black and cinnamon black bear in the trees near Ski Slope. At 5:00 p.m. I spotted a grizzly sow with two COY'S north of Slough Creek high up. At 9:00 p.m. I found a very large cinnamon black bear near the Montana-Wyoming line.

Saturday - 01 June

37 degrees this morning warming up to 68 degrees. I visited Dan H. today and he had a male marten near his place. At 6:15 a.m. I started off with a black bear south of Slough Creek. At 6:30 a.m. we had a grizzly sow with two COY'S south of Slough Creek. At 6:45 a.m. as we watched the two COY'S, they began to stand up and run down and around rocks heading for the trees. We finally located the sow who had detected another grizzly (quite possibly the white faced sow who was with a two year old cub a day or two ago), and chased the grizzly away. Then she scent tracked the two COY'S and reunited with them. At 8:20 a.m. we had a black bear south of the Institute. At 8:35 a.m. Rick M. showed me the black and two grays (the entire adult Lamar Canyon Pack) going south in Cache Creek. Later while chatting with others, I found them coming back to be in sight on Cache Creek-lower Norris. At 10:30 a.m. I spotted a black bear on the fingers of Norris. At 7:45 p.m. we had a cinnamon black bear in the Rendezvous area. At 7:45 p.m. I spotted a dark grizzly in the Rendezvous Area.

Sunday - 02 June

41 degrees this morning warming to 75 degrees. We had a badger near Dorothy's Knoll today. The coyote den south of Dorothy's now has six puppies. And late tonight the alpha female of the Canyon Wolf Pack moved her pups from the den area to the rendezvous site (same area as the last two years - east and north of Grizzly Overlook in the Hayden Valley). The pup count is two black and one gray. At 6:00 a.m. we watched a black bear in Square Meadow. At 6:20 a.m. I spotted a grizzly high north and west of Slough Creek. At 6:40 a.m. I found a cinnamon black bear in the A-Z clearing. At 8:00 a.m. we had a grizzly sow with two yearlings in K-2. At 8:50 a.m. we watched a large grizzly south of K-2 Meadow. At 12:30 p.m. Laurie D. found a grizzly in the bowl south and west of the Institute, but viewed from Footbridge Pullout. At 2:00 p.m. the black bear sow with one black and one cinnamon yearling cub were in Crystal Drainage. At 2:30 p.m. a black bear sow with one black yearling cub east of the Diagonal Forest south of Slough Creek. At 5:55 p.m. a grizzly in the Salad Bowl viewed from Dorothy's Knoll. At 7:40 p.m. a grizzly sow with three COY'S north and high above Soda Butte East Pullout (Laurie D. had found them and we tried to get Jim H. bear class on them - after a brief shower, she appeared and nursed the COY'S - I was near Trout Lake, Jim's group was at Soda Butte East Pullout and Laurie went to the Soda Butte Cone - and they were in view for all of us at the same time).

At 8:15 a.m. I spotted a grizzly high north and west of Slough Creek. At 10:25 a.m. I found a courting pair of grizzlies in 10-4 clearing from the new bathroom pullout near Chittenden Road near Antelope Creek. The sow had a large white patch behind her front legs. She ran him around for over an hour, sometimes waiting for him to catch up. At 3:00 p.m. we watched a small grizzly east of Mary's Bay east of Fishing Bridge. At 4:00 p.m. a large grizzly swims the Yellowstone River near Alum Creek in Hayden Valley. Jack G. and I were glassing west when an older couple spotted the large grizzly to the east. Today was the only day I ventured out of Lamar Valley and Slough Creek areas, running to the south and east during the mid-day. At 6:00 p.m. going thru the road construction near Calcite a black sow with one black yearling cub (this must be the black bear that had two COY'S last year causing bear jams in the same area). At 6:15 p.m. Laurie D. found a black bear sow with a black yearling cub in the rocks above the golden eagle nest down the Slough Creek road. At 8:00 p.m. my last sightings was a large grizzly north of Picnic.

The grizzly family was hunting elk calves, the black bear family was just getting out of the grizzly family's way. At 1:00 p.m. I heard from Carl S. that there was a grizzly with a yearling south of the Soda Butte Picnic Area. Of course out of sight by the time I got there, so setting up the lawn chair, I waited until close to 3:30 p.m. for her to re-appear.
