Friday - 06 June

37 degrees this morning warming up to 61 degrees. I had three foxes today, but no wolves. At 8:00 a.m. I spotted a large cinnamon black bear at Antelope Creek. At 8:10 a.m. I found a large black bear also at Antelope Creek. I found a campsite at Tower Campground and stayed there for my entire trip. At 8:55 a.m. there was a black bear at Calcite (it was the sow with the three cubs of the year (coys), but I did not see the cubs). At 7:15 p.m. we watched a small grizzly low on the Divide Ridge viewed from the Slough Creek bathroom. At 7:20 p.m. we had a small cinnamon black bear below Specimen Ridge viewed from the Slough Creek bathroom. At 7:25 p.m. I watched a large cinnamon black bear in the same area.

Saturday - 07 June

35 degrees warming up to 66 degrees. Low clouds and fog until 8:15 a.m. this morning in Lamar Valley. I had Ruddy Ducks, Coots, and Yellow Bellied Marmots at Floating Island Lake, but no little ones yet. The Sand hill Crane is on the nest in the marshy area to the east of Floating Island Lake (had one colt later on this trip). Across from the Institute towards evening, two balloons amused a small herd of bison for about 30 minutes (where the balloons came from, not sure - later saw two balloons in the Slough Creek bottoms). At 5:20 a.m. wolf 890M the Junction Butte alpha male chased an elk thru the Slough Creek bottoms both swimming the creek. At 5:30 a.m. wolf 907F came across in the same area. At 5:45 a.m. I spotted a black bear near #9's old den. At 1:45 p.m. the black bear sow with three coy's was 20 yards west of Rainy Lake. At 4:10 p.m. I spotted a black bear and a cinnamon black bear high south of the # 1 finger of Norris (probably a courting pair, but no sure). At 7:00 p.m. we had a black bear south of the Institute in the tree line. At 7:50 p.m. Margaret and Jean showed me a grizzly on the # 5 finger on Norris running from a large grizzly which I did not see.

Sunday - 08 June

At 7:45 p.m. we had two sub adult grizzlies in a clearing east of Ski Slope. At 8:00 p.m. I found a large grizzly on Norris. At 8:25 p.m. my last sighting for the day was a courting pair of grizzlies in the bowl viewed from the Institute.

At 6:50 a.m. we had two courting black bears west of the Aspen Drainage north in Slough Creek. At 7:30 a.m. wolf 755M and the three year old black female from the Junction Butte pack were south of Trash Can. At 9:00 a.m. the grizzly sow with one coy on Junction Butte first viewed from the Tower Gas Station, later good viewing from the Peregrine nest pullout (note: this is the only grizzly with coy in the whole northern range, to my knowledge). At 6:00 p.m. we had a black bear on Rainy Lake. At 8:30 p.m. I spotted a small cinnamon black bear low in the A-Z Clearing.

Thursday - 12 June

36 degrees warming up to 77 degrees today. I had a badger in Little America, and the peregrine nest had one chick and two eggs today. At 5:15 a.m. wolf 925M "Big Gray" was on the carcass north of Soda Butte East. At 5:45 a.m. I spotted a large grizzly in the bowl viewed from the Institute. At 6:00 a.m. we had a large grizzly on Ski Slope. At 6:20 a.m. I found a grizzly on the skyline east of A-Z Meadow. At 7:30 a.m. I spotted a large grizzly south of trash can (hunting elk calves in the tree line, then chased a bison calf near the river, then was chased by cows of the bison herd, then swam the river and crossed the road going north). At 7:45 a.m. we had a courting pair of grizzlies south of trash can in the tree line. The bear researchers must have been out this morning, as a plane circled the pair several times running them into the trees (earlier, Ken T. said they did the same thing to the grizzly on Ski Slope). At 9:00 a.m. I spotted a grizzly grazing north of Coyote Overlook. At 9:30 a.m. the grizzly with one coy was napping on the south end of Junction Butte. At 11:30 a.m. a cinnamon black bear was hunting elk calves in Antelope Creek. At 5:40 p.m. I spotted a courting pair of grizzlies on a last high ridge south of the Institute viewed from Dorothy's Pullout.

Friday - 13 June

52 degrees this morning warming up to 64 degrees. A Western Tanager viewed from the peregrine nest pullout this morning. At 7:00 a.m. I started the day with a courting pair of grizzlies on the skyline east of A-Z Clearing. At 8:00 a.m. I found a large cinnamon black bear comes to a new bison carcass southwest of Fisherman's Pullout (unopened, a cow probably died in calving). At 9:00 a.m. the black bear with three coy's was at Calcite. At 4:20 p.m. we watched a courting pair of grizzlies on the backside of Specimen Ridge below Gun sight. At 6:10 p.m. the grizzly sow with one coy on Junction Butte viewed from the Peregrine Nest Pullout. At 7:30 p.m. I spotted a black bear high clearing east of Penny Lane.

Saturday - 14 June

36 degrees this morning warming up to 55 degrees. I forgot to mention that the large log entrance to Roosevelt area has been taken down. Also they saw wolf puppies from the S Curve (Frog Rock, Children's Fire Walk, or some call it the Self-Guided trail about half way between Mammoth and Tower - 763's Group. At 5:20 a.m. the cinnamon black bear back on the carcass southwest of Fisherman's Pullout. At 6:10 a.m. a large boar grizzly in the bowl south of the Institute. At 5:30 a.m. wolf 755M and the three year old black female from the Junction Butte pack were in the rendezvous area south and east of Picnic. At 5:45 a.m. I spotted the two sub adults low in the K Meadow. At 5:45 a.m. I found a large dark grizzly close to the sub adults in the K Meadow (boy are those sub adults small). At 6:00 a.m. I spotted another grizzly higher in the K Meadow (the larger grizzly checked out the sub adults, then walked up hill and checked out the other grizzly before all moved off separately). At 6:40 a.m. we had a cinnamon black bear crosses the lower part of K Meadow. At 7:00 a.m. I spotted a large grizzly leaving the bison carcass south and west of Fisherman's (it had not been there at daylight, must have come in later). At 8:00 a.m. we had a black bear roadside at the peregrine nest pullout. At 11:20 a.m. a grizzly sow with a yearling cub was 150 yards off the road near Grizzly Lake Trail head (good new bears). At 7:00 p.m. we watched a black bear cross the road from South to North at the S Curve near Frog Rock. At 7:35 p.m. I spotted a large dark grizzly high and west of the S Curve. Monday - 16 June

36 degrees this morning warming up to 60 degrees. At 5:25 a.m. I spotted a courting pair of grizzlies sharing the bison carcass south and west of Fisherman's Pullout. At 5:30 a.m. another grizzly approaches the carcass from the west, thought better of it and moved away (but returned around 8:00 p.m. to have the carcass to itself). At 5:45 a.m. I found a courting pair of grizzlies on the sky line west of A-Z Meadow. At 6:20 a.m. we had two sub adult grizzlies in K Meadow. At 6:50 a.m. wolf 911M and the three year old black Junction Butte wolf on a new bison carcass south of Picnic. At 7:50 a.m. Scarface arrives at the new bison carcass south of Picnic (he fed and left, but came back at least two other times and was on the carcass at dusk). At 8:50 a.m. Wayne K. found the grizzly sow with one coy high on the ridge south of Straight Away. At 4:00 p.m. I spotted a courting pair far southwest of the Institute viewed from Dorothy's (pretty sure a different pair from near A-Z in the morning, this boar was twice the sow's size). At 4:15 p.m. wolf 889F came to the carcass south of Picnic. At 6:00 p.m. a gray wolf uncollared Junction Butte wolf joins wolf 911M and the black female and came to the carcass south of Picnic. At 7:45 p.m. I spotted a cinnamon black bear and a black bear chasing each other across the bottom of A-Z Meadow.

Tuesday - 17 June

42 degrees this morning warming up to 52 degrees (uncomfortable, but good bear watching weather). At 5:15 a.m. Scarface and a larger grizzly were on the bison carcass south of Picnic (the larger grizzly had the carcass, Scarface was picking up pieces around the carcass). At 5:15 a.m. wolf 911M, a gray Junction Butte male, and the three year old black Junction Butte female came into the carcass (they too were relegated to pieces around the main carcass). At 6:50 a.m. I spotted a grizzly on the middle ridge of Crystal from the Slough Creek bathroom. At 7:05 a.m. I found a cinnamon black bear in Crystal Drainage. At 7:20 a.m. Wayne K. again found the grizzly sow with one coy high near the sky line south of Boulder Pullout. At 8:50 a.m. wolf 889F came to the bison carcass south of Picnic (everything else had left for the trees by then). At 9:15 a.m. I spotted a grizzly in the high clearing way south of the Institute viewed from Dorothy's Pullout. At 9:40 a.m. we had a large black bear high Aspen drainage north in Slough Creek. At 9:55 a.m. we watched a courting pair of grizzlies high on Prospect viewed from Boulder (a lot of traveling, as she was not in the mood). At 10:20 a.m. I spotted a large cinnamon black bear just off the road .5 mile north of T-57 at Antelope Creek. At 10:30 a.m. I spotted a grizzly sow with one yearling cub on # 3 clearing at Antelope Creek. At 9:00 p.m. the black bear with three coys was north and west of Rainy Lake (during this week this sow caught two different mule deer fawns quite close to Roosevelt Lodge).

Wednesday - 18 June

39 degrees warming up to a cool 52 degrees. A badger today near Footbridge Pullout. At 5:10 a.m. I spotted two sub adult grizzlies coming to the bison carcass south of Picnic (it was pretty much gone now). At 5:35 a.m. speaking of really nothing left, a colorful grizzly came to the bison carcass south and west of Fisherman's. At 5:45 a.m. I spotted a grizzly on the sky line west of A-Z Meadow. At 6:20 a.m. Wayne K. found the grizzly sow with one coy high near the sky line south of Long Pullout. They did make it to Specimen Ridge today and provided hours of viewing from anywhere between Lamar River Bridge to Lamar Canyon West. At 7:10 a.m. we watched a courting pair of grizzlies run into the earlier grizzly that was near A-Z. The sow ran towards the A-Z grizzly but the boar ran the A-Z grizzly off. At 7:25 a.m. we had a brown grizzly 100 yards north of coyote (apparently it crossed the road later to the south and went way down to the bison carcass south of Picnic). At 7:45 a.m. I found a small dark grizzly west of Bob's Knob (it earlier swam the river near Aspen Pullout). At 6:40 p.m. wolf 911M crossed the road from west to east one mile south of Tower Campground. At 6:45 p.m. we had two grizzlies on the back side of Specimen Ridge north of Gun Sight. At 7:00 p.m. a large grizzly crosses Honeymoon Clearing across from T-58 in Antelope Creek (this use to be a great place to spot of grizzlies, but this is the first bear I have seen in that clearing for 5-6 years). At 7:35 p.m. I spotted a grizzly on Roof Top on the backside of Specimen Ridge viewed from Antelope Creek.

Thursday - 19 June

42 degrees this morning warming up to 62 degrees. At 5:15 a.m. wolf 911M and the black female of the Junction Butte Pack were digging out a coyote den in the rendezvous area (I left after 30 minutes or so, but apparently they got a couple and one or two were seen leaving with the adult coyotes later). At 6:25 a.m. I spotted a grizzly leaving the bison carcass at Fisherman's. At 6:35 a.m. we had a colorful grizzly south of the Institute. At 7:15 a.m. a grizzly crosses the road south to north west of the Institute (apparently this one was darker than the colorful grizzly out earlier and both swam the river and crossed the road to the north). At 7:15 a.m. we had the two sub adult grizzlies south of Picnic (they were out again for the last four hours in A-Z / I can see why they are small, they spent most of the time playing and side stepping a few bull bison in the A-Z Clearing). At 7:20 a.m. we had a dark grizzly north of Fisherman's moving west. At 8:30 a.m. the grizzly sow with one coy was on Specimen Ridge again, not 100 yards from yesterday's sighting (again out for hours in view from Lamar Canyon West). At 6:50 p.m. I found a grizzly in the high clearing east of Penny Lane. At 7:50 p.m. wolves 890M, 907F and two gray Junction Butte members were north of the Institute. At 8:00 p.m. I found two grizzlies high in the bowl from the Institute (probably a courting pair, but about 100 yards apart). At 8:30 p.m. we had a large grizzly in the clearing way south of the Institute viewed from Dorothy's Pullout. At 9:05 p.m. my last sighting for the day was a grizzly high north of Coyote Overlook.

Friday - 20 June

40 degrees this morning warming to 72 degrees. A bull moose was in the confluence this morning, two red tailed hawk chicks in the old owl nest at Lamar Canyon East, and a badger den with two not so little ones south of Dorothy's just before the ridge drops off (afraid a lot of people walking out to view the valley, probably won't be there long). At 6:10 a.m. I spotted a large grizzly in the bowl viewed from the Institute. At 6:20 a.m. a courting pair of black bears in the Salad Bowl spotted by MacNeil L. At 6:25 a.m. I found the two sub adults high in the bowl running from the large grizzly, but they settled down in the top of A-Z for an hour or so of viewing. At 7:15 a.m. the gray male yearling wolf of the Junction Butte pack was south of Midpoint. At 1:40 p.m. we had a black bear at Rainy Lake. At 2:30 p.m. we watched a dark grizzly north of Picnic Area (one of only a couple I have seen from there this year). At 6:15 p.m. I spotted a courting pair of grizzlies south of Sky Slope. At 6:30 p.m. I found a brown grizzly grazing north and east of Coyote Overlook. At 6:45 p.m. we watched a grizzly hunting north of Coyote Overlook. Note: no sightings of the coyote den with five north and east of Dorothy's, but I heard she had moved them to Ranger Rock north and west of the Institute.

Saturday - 21 June

37 degrees warming to 72 degrees. A moose on Sky Slope (not sure why up there), two red tail hawk chicks at the Specimen Trail Head east of the Yellowstone River Picnic area, and the mosquitos have arrived, particularly near Slough Creek, even up to the road. At 5:10 a.m. I found a dark grizzly south of the Institute. At 5:30 a.m. I spotted a grizzly in the bowl viewed from the Institute. At 5:40 a.m. we had two sub adults low on the Square Meadow. At 6:00 a.m. the Junction Butte gray male yearling wolf was south of Picnic (found a bone from the old bison carcass, chewed on it for well over 40 minutes). At 7:00 a.m. I spotted a large cinnamon black bear just off the road north of T-57 at Antelope Creek. At 7:45 a.m. we had a medium sized grizzly in the bottoms of Antelope Creek. At 7:50 a.m. the grizzly sow with one yearling cub was also in the bottoms at Antelope Creek (lots of playing and chasing in fun between the two this morning). At 8:15 a.m. a bear jam just south of the exit to Tower Campground, a black sow with one brown and one black large coys (I have heard about this family for a couple of weeks, but my first look at them (she was grazing 25 yards off the road and the two cubs were up a tree 25 yards from mom and 10 yards from the road). At 9:30 a.m. I spotted a grizzly grazing high north of Coyote Overlook. From 7:15 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. we watched off and on five adults and three pups of 763's group from near the S Curve near Frog Rock. A big thanks to Chloe and Linda who kept moving on the hill west of the Pullout east of the S Curve, finding a place to see all of them. A day after I left they had six adults, as another black joined them (I assume from the original 8 Mile Pack which had like six blacks and two or three gray yearlings plus the alpha pair).

Sunday - 22 June

40 degrees this morning as I made a very early exit from the park. The big cinnamon black bear was on the road near the exit to the Gut Road south of Tower.

Other News

Everything remains green everywhere. Only a few of the really high clearings show signs of partly drying old. Phantom Lake is still 1/3 full. The rivers and creeks have dropped in water flow and are starting to clear up a little, good news for the eagles and ospreys.
