Yellowstone National Park 2014 Trip Reports
Trip Report ~ Bear & Wolf Sightings ~ by Bill Hamblin
13 through 18 October 2014
~ October 2014 ~
Monday - 13 October
I left Idaho Falls late morning and made good time to the park. Nothing in Hayden Valley and Antelope Creek but did find the black bear with three cubs near Rainy Lake sleeping under a tree at 2:35 p.m. I decided to go outside the park and watch Yankee Jim Canyon for the rest of the day. I did have a moose cow with two this year calves there. At 6:35 p.m. the grizzly sow with three coys at Yankee Jim Canyon. At 6:55 p.m. a light grizzly in Yankee Jim Canyon. At 7:05 p.m. a dark grizzly in Yankee Jim Canyon.
Tuesday - 14 October
I stayed at La Duke this entire trip. 46 degrees this morning warming up to 57 degrees. A skunk on the road going to Yankee Jim Canyon. Later in the day I hiked up on top of Junction Butte with Wayne K. At 7:10 a.m. the grizzly sow with three coys at Yankee Jim Canyon. At 7:25 a.m. a grizzly leaving the field at Yankee Jim Canyon. At 9:15 a.m. a gray wolf of the 8 Mile Pack at Swan Lake Flat. At 9:30 a.m. a black wolf at Swan Lake Flats. At 2:00 p.m. the black bear sow with three cubs bedded in the same place as yesterday near Rainy Lake. At 6:50 p.m. a black wolf at Swan Lake Flats.
Wednesday - 15 October
47 degrees this morning warming up to 64 but very windy today made it feel a lot colder. At 7:30 a.m. a black wolf on Swan Lake Flats. At 2:00 p.m. the black bear sow with the three cubs bedded in the same place as the last two days near Rainy Lake (I think it's close to bed time for these bears). At 6:15 p.m. a large grizzly at Yankee Jim Canyon. At 6:30 p.m. the grizzly with the three coys at Yankee Jim Canyon. I'm amazed how easily the bears go thru the fences. The fences are mostly four strands of barb wire and the large ones step on the bottom two and pass right thru, the cubs just slip between the bottom on the next strand.
Thursday - 16 October
37 degrees this morning warming up to a nice 60 degrees. A coyote, a bull and cow moose at the Black tail, and a cow moose with two this year’s calves at Yankee Jim Canyon. At 1:45 p.m. Marlene F. found 910M a black wolf that stays pretty much by himself on the Black Tail Plateau (he is a 8 Mile that occasional rejoins the 8 Mile and sometimes joins the Prospect Peak Pack who are themselves 8 Mile wolves). At 6:30 p.m. a grizzly at Yankee Jim Canyon.
Friday - 17 October
32 degrees this morning warming up to close to 60 degrees, nice day. Wayne K and I walked down to the confluence of the Yellowstone and Lamar Rivers finding a set of nice grizzly tracks on a sand bar of the Lamar River. A coyote in Hayden Valley and a bull moose in Yankee Jim Canyon today. At 7:10 a.m. a black wolf of the 8 Mile Pack bedded and occasionally howling at Swan Lake Flats. At 8:30 a.m. Wayne K found nine of the ten Junction Butte Pack wolves playing at Hellroaring near the Basalt Cliffs. At 10:15 a.m. 925M the alpha male of the Lamar Canyon wolves crossing the river between Hitching Post and Footbridge in Lamar Valley. At 6:15 p.m. a grizzly at Yankee Jim Canyon. At 6:30 p.m. a grizzly in Yankee Jim Canyon. And at 6:40 p.m. the grizzly sow with three coys in Yankee Jim Canyon. It gets dark at 7:00 p.m. so not a lot of time to view them when they come out in the evening.
Saturday - 18 October
44 degrees this morning at La Duke, but 30 degrees at daylight at Swan Lake Flats. I made it a short day today, heading home just before noon. At 9:00 a.m. the grizzly sow with two yearlings in Alum Creek in the Hayden Valley. At 8:30 a.m. a grizzly sow with two large coys east of Grizzly Overlook. At 10:15 a.m. a small light grizzly from Grizzly Overlook looking way to the north near Wapiti Trail head.
