Mort, Steve and I were up before sunrise on this Wed. morning. Steve had finished his work with YCERP the Thursday before, so he had a whole week to hang out with us! We broke camp at Mammoth in the dark and hit the road. On one of our evenings at Mammoth, while we were eating dinner, I heard an elk bugle! I've never heard that before :-)

On this day, we were heading toward Sunlight Basin - another hike outside the park. We drove through the Lamar Valley intending to stop for breakfast at the Yellowstone River picnic area. We ran into one of THE biggest bison jams I've ever seen in the park. It was like a river of bison meandering down the road. There was nothing to do but slow down and follow them. The picnic area was full of bison, so we continued on. Eventually, one bison decided to meander off the road and uphill. All the others followed and the road was cleared.

It was now about 7 a.m. We saw a group of wolf watchers in the Little America area. There were two rangers blocking the road. Apparently the Mollies were still hanging around and quite near the road. Tha rangers were trying to keep folks moving so the wolves could cross the road if the wanted to. We wer able to get a good look at the group of 8-10 wolves as we drove slowly through the area. Didn't have time to stop today, though, we wanted to get to the TH at a decent time.

We stopped at the picnic area up by Trout Lake for our oatmeal and fruit and hot tea breakfast.

This photo is early morning in the Lamar.
