TroutTeaser,

Having done this hike the more "normal" way, besides the exotic way, I will add to what Bison provided. It is about a mile from Shoshone Lake to Pocket Lake. It starts out flat, for maybe a couple tenths of a mile, then gradually steepens. The gain is fairly gradual for most of the climb, but the last part of the uphill is steep enough that it impacts anyone real young, real old, overweight, or out of shape. The very last stretch levels out.

When I think about it, compared to doing the Trout Lake trail, I would say it is about equal to two times the vertical and exertion of that trail. Of course, one has to keep in mind that there is the DeLacy Creek trail (3 miles each way) and a couple miles each way on the North Shore trail. Perhaps the worst aspect of the uphill to Pocket Lake is its southerly orientation, and the fact most folks do it during the warmer part of the day, given the long approach. A hard core fisherman, getting a real early start, would dodge that bullet.
