Bison,

I had not thought about this while we were wandering through there, but seeing this photo, I am drawn to wondering just what critter or critters might have rubbed on certain parts of that tree, producing that polished effect. I'm always on the lookout for "sign" when off-trail, wondering what critters inhabit the area. Up on that forested ridge, we were a fur piece from the nearest elk habitat. You might remember we saw very little elk scat, if any. I don't remember seeing any bison pies either. Given the lack of large mammals, thus lack of winter kill/carcasses, plus typical lodgepole pine "in the caldera" lack of ground cover/edible vegetation, I would be plenty surprised to run into a bear up there. I have no idea who is polishing the trees. Just wonderin'..............
