Businesses and entities in gateway communities are being asked to shell out a significant amount of money for the sake of opening park gates on the pre-sequestration timetable. The argument being used is to avoid a loss of tourist revenue in these communities.

But based on timetables like the one John linked (which is the same one I've seen here on the eastern fringe), here's the scenario they paint. Cody businesses have come up with the money to open the East gate to Fishing Bridge on its original time table, which would be May 3. But the NPS schedule says Bridge to Canyon won't open until May 17. Bridge to Thumb a week later on May 24. If all those numbers are true, then from May 3-17, people entering via East will have to U-turn at Bridge to exit because they won't have a link anywhere within the park to go elsewhere once they reach Bridge.

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't see that making a huge economic impact in Cody. A lot of locals like myself will make the trip in, sure, but our money is being spent in the community regardless, so nobody is making anything off of me that they wouldn't have already got, aside from maybe an extra tank of gas or two. The early-season tourist dollars aren't going to arrive for that, though. They'll circumnavigate the park to Gardiner and West.

I'm trying to discern if the NPS has made any sort of statement to the effect of "if you raise the money to open the gate by X-date, we will do our part by having the interior roads open as originally scheduled so that traffic can actually flow through the park."
