The walk around Phelps Lake, starting at the Laurance Rockefeller Preserve visitor center along Moose-Wilson Road, is wonderful. What elevation change there is, is almost all gradual, and it's so lovely assuming you like walking through woods along a beautiful Lake Creek, then around the lake, with the woods opening up to spectacular views every once in a while?

If you can do only a couple of(round trip) miles, you can just walk through the woods along the creek to the lake and sit on a nice big rock there enjoying the view of Prospector Peak across the water without having to walk all the way around the lake to have a great experience.

Sad to say, I hear the Rockefeller Preserve VC itself will not open this summer due to sequestration, but I assume the parking lot will be open and that you will be able to walk to the back of the building to pick up the trail.

If the VC is open, do allow a few minutes to go inside - especially to sit in the Sounditorium for 10 minutes. It's really special.
