there was a family of three in the parking area. They were new to hiking in bear country and asked if they could join our family of 5. We said "Sure!" and had a nice dayhike with them. We didn't see any bears but we did see a few bison. Don't know if a stop at the ranger station would help since most hikers probably don't check in there first. When we hiked, it was August and we saw quite a few other people on the trail. Maybe a good chance you could hook up with someone at the trailhead.
