A group of four of us were attempting the hike from west to east, with a vehicle stationed at the Footbridge pullout. Another one of the group and I were not feeling up to par that day, so we decided to turn around after seeing the very steep ascent to Amethyst Mountain from the direction we had chosen.
We managed to get back to our vehicles, where the two who had successfully completed the trail had been waiting for us for a couple of hours. When we compared the mileage on GPS s for the two groups, we were surprised to find that those who had turned back had hiked about a mile further that the group who completed the hike. That mileage was also greater than the listed mileage for the hike.
From that we learned that the highest point, Amethyst Mountain, is past the half way point going from the west. We also learned a lesson about turning around early if the day is not a good one for you.
All was not lost for those who returned, as we had a grizzly run across our path at a safe distance and twin pronghorn young curiously approach us on the way down.
