Yellowstone mothers are very protective of their babies, especially when they're very young, so it is always a huge treat to see them up close.
Late one afternoon we happened upon a small crowd a couple of houses south from Albright VC. The ranger kept everyone on the sidewalk but we still were able to get a terrific view of what they were looking at: an elk cow and her newborn calf. This baby was probably a couple of hours old, he was dry and fluffy, and his umbilical cord was no longer attached. And he hadn't had much practice at standing up!
