Hey Dave, keep in mind that what gets reported in the news is never complete information and often uses inaccurate language from which inaccurate conclusions are drawn.
The Yellowstone incident apparently involved a mother grizzly defending her cub. My read of the minimal information is that two of the four hikers bore the brunt of the defensive attack (they may simply have been in closer proximity to either the cub or the sow) and the other two came to their aid by their timely deployment of bear spray...which seems to have prevented further injury and sent the bears running. Which is exactly what bear spray use is supposed to do.
The Idaho situation seems to have been a surprise situation, but also resulted (thankfully) in less than fatal injuries.
