It is pretty rare for a bear to attack a group that large, that's why much of the literature recommends hiking in groups of 4 or more in high density bear areas. I wonder if the hikers were walking single file because they were on trail which may have thrown the bear off to the size of their group. Nonetheless, she was protecting her cub and maybe it didn't matter how many people were there. I read in the comment section of one of the articles about the attack that it is hard to believe that a group of 4 hikers could surprise a bear. I agree. I would think that a bear would know they were coming, but obviously that wasn't the case.
