One thing not being reported by the media is that there were two hikers hiking alone initially. They were attacked and another couple happened along as the attack was concluding and helped the injured hike out to the trailhead. The bear did not attack a group of four. I'm still not sure yet which couple deployed the bear spray, but it sounds like the two initial hikers were completely caught off guard by the cub & the sow.

Also, one of those attacked was an off duty NPS interp ranger (required 18 stitches).
