Kent,

This sparked the recall of an event on Labor Day Weekend of 2002. Five of us had backpacked in to Heart Lake to hoof it up Mt. Sheridan. One morning, I remember hearing a lone howl from a long ways off, to the south of us. It started before dawn, and went on intermittently for quite some time. It definitely had a mournful quality to it. I remember laying in my tent, listening intently, wondering what that wolf's story was. (This had to be the morning of our second day, before we did the ascent of Sheridan. If it had been the third day, I would have been out like a light, recovering from the workout, regardless of nature sounds.)

Since we are focused on audibles, here is another event from that night/morning. In the middle of the night, we heard a bunch of movement in the brush not far from the tent. We feared it might be or ursine origin, but did not venture forth to verify our suspicion. The next morning, we discovered that a cow moose and calf had chosen a spot about 20-30 feet from our tent to bed down for the evening.

greywolf was with us that weekend. I wonder if she remembers hearing that wolf.
