If you handhold your camera, it is worth remembering a rule of thumb concerning the minimum shutter speed that is generally, sufficient to prevent a loss of sharpness due to camera shake. Take the reciprocal value of the lens focal length (mm), and use this as the slowest shutter speed with the lens. For example, with a focal length of 200 mm, set a minimum shutter-sped of 1/200th second.

Longer focal length lenses, and higher subject magnification in close-up photograph, amplify the effects of camera shake.
