Voracious Readers of Yellowstone Books,

If you are one of the Loons who has read Mountain Time multiple times, I have a recommendation on a recently-published book, available at the Y.A. book store (in the park or online).

If you ever worked in the vicinity of Fishing Bridge/Lake, this is must read stuff!

If you are old enough to know of Bob Murphy, Jerry Mernin, or John Lounsbury, you will get a kick out of the Yellowstone history represented in this book.

Marjane Ambler, the author, is a long time writer. This is not her first book. She has a very enjoyable writing style. Each chapter is a relatively self-contained story, which makes for great "installment reading". Marjane and her husband, Terry, lived and worked year-round in the Lake area from 1984 to 1994. You get a sense of what it was like to be one of 12 year-round residents in the winter.

I am most of the way through the book. I have been reading it in installments over time, savoring it, like a fine wine. Marjane interviewed many of the renowned old rangers and district rangers, who lived and worked in Yellowstone from the 1930s to the 1970s. I like the fact that Marjane simply retells their stories, and does not airbrush out politically incorrect truths (at least via 2014).

I would encourage anyone who purchases the book to buy it from the Yellowstone Association, even if you could save a few cents by going elsewhere. If you are a member, you get a 15% discount right up front. Supporting YA through our purchases helps them justify carrying books like this, which are not likely to have a wide readership outside Yellowstone junkies. (Yes, there is some real literary trash out there, but this is not one of them.)

If you are a real Yellowstone history fanatic, check out this web site, and click on "Yellowstone Faces": http://www.marjaneambler.com

You will see photos of many of the people in the book.

Confidential to greywolf: Rick and Margie are even mentioned in the book!

Enjoy,

Ballpark
