There is no fixed date for the seasonal opening or closing. Typically, it all depends on how dry the road is. Even in mid-summer, if we get a lot of moisture, the road will be closed for a while until it dries to some desired level determined by either the Maintenance Division or the Resource Protection Division (not sure who has the final say).

Most years, the closures become more frequent in late September and early October, until finally, a good size snowstorm shuts the road down for the season. We have put together Fall Color Walks that started from the road on several occasions. That is usually the last weekend of September. I don't remember any of them being cancelled or moved due to closings. That activity was usually scheduled for the last Saturday in September or very first Saturday in October.
