I can't help but wonder if Mammoth is just slowly dying--I mean, I understand all about cycles and all, and some spots having activity while others run dry, but the overall activity has dropped so much since I first saw the place (in 1989) that I still wonder. On this trip there was a bit of activity way to the "right" side (north, I suppose) and a bit far to the south, and that was essentially it, with a huge expanse of "dead" terrace in between. I suppose that raises the question of what would happen to the tourist facilities in the area if the terraces were to essentially shut completely down--no real reason for anyone to stay there, but then again the number of rooms and restaurants within the park are so limited that maybe it would still stay full.

We didn't get to the upper terrace area on this trip. Maybe all the activity has moved up there, in which case these musings are meaningless.
