When I was growing up, my dad often spoke about his family's August 1935 trip to Yellowstone when he was 9 years old. Through his descriptions it became in my mind a place like no other. We weren't able to go there when I was small, but when I got old enough to travel on my own, I finally made it out there in 1975 and found that it was everything he had described and more.

Dad passed away a few weeks ago at the ago of 88, after a long difficult battle with cancer. It's good to think back, though, on the Yellowstone stories we were able to share, and I'm glad he's been with us for all of these years and that we were able to compare our experiences there. In this photo, he's the small boy standing, facing the camera. The older boy to his right is the son of their neighbors, who also went along on that trip (nobody else in the photo is related). It wasn't an easy trip, with most of the roads out west still unpaved and sometimes muddy. They went through Cody on their way and bought fishing poles, and stayed in tent cabins at Fishing Bridge. I've never gone to Yellowstone without thinking of their trip all those years ago.
