If you are doing the north end of the park first, you can introduce your grandson to the boardwalks on the terraces. Those are mostly natural wood, though there may be some composition stretches near Canary Spring. If he can tolerate those, you shouldn't have trouble with the more extensive composition panels at Old Faithful. It occurred to me that there are several different textures of boardwalks at OF, and some of them are tricky to walk on.

Regarding noise, the north end is rather quieter than OF will be. Maybe you can get hold of some DVDs of mud pots and geysers, and practice listening to the different sounds...getting everyone used to the soundscaping. Hope the traffic doesn't give him problems.

Can you get a temporary disability tag from your doctor so you can use handicapped parking slots? Close-in parking may be a huge help if things don't work out. When I took my mother in her wheelchair into places, it was always a problem, because I'd get her out of the vehicle from a handicapped spot, then have to leave her while I found a regular parking space. I'd have to ask strangers to stay with her until I got back...not such a great idea.
