There was a time when the Institute did have "rough rider" cabins.

When I first started attending in 1983, the YI participants stayed in Roosevelt-style cabins which had been recycled from Lake and Fishing Bridge. But the cabins were on their last legs, and not very comfortable. In the late 90's, they were replaced by better insulated and heated cabins purpose-built for the Association, along with improved bath and shower facilities. The current footprint of the modern cabins is a little different than the old cabins, which may have provided a better view out into the Lamar. Today the cabins are arranged in two semi-circles on the path to the historic cooking and classroom structure, with the road that used to pass through the middle of things now relocated to the east of the cabins and bath-house. A note for those who want to attend the YI courses: you will need to plan to bring your own food if you want to eat at the Institute, meals are not provided.
