From the Museum sign:

Wolf, 1988
Oil on board
Ken Carlson (United States, b. 1937)

Ken Carlson is know for his naturalistic depictions of wildlife, but also for his uncanny ability to capture the essence of an animal in abstract compositions like this one. By removing the normal rendition of habitat from this painting, Carlson focuses on the wolf, itself. The dynamic brushstrokes and colors of the background heighten the overall impression, creating a work that is powerful in presence and sensitive to the creature being painted.
