Hoot,

In the 1970s, we were always in the park in June or early July. I don't think the river (between the lake and the Falls) was ever open to fishing when we were there.

I did spend 4 or 5 days out on Shoshone Lake canoeing in 1982. It was mid-August. I fished and I fished, but never caught anything. Very strange! I have a photo in my slide collection of a fly fisherman on the river that connects Shoshone to Lewis Lake. We were on our way back. As we were paddling downriver, the fisherman caught a good-size fish. He brought it over to the boat, so my daughter could get a good look at it. She wanted to "pet the fish", but we had to tell her to keep her hand in the boat.

So, given what you are saying, it sounds like maybe most, or all of those big lunkers in the river are spawners. I wonder if any large cuts woulds simply stay in the river, or if that is against their nature?
