I think Hoot's answer is on the money, as it were. Yellowstone has become an extremely popular place to visit now, as you know, attracting visitors from around the globe, and the Mars, too, I think. Concessionaires there have always run over-snow vehicle tours in the winter, but since the word got out that bob cats often sit in blinds along the Madison River to pounce on unsuspecting geese and ducks as they float by for an easy (though feathery) meal, demand for those tours has skyrocketed. The typical route is West to Madison Junction to Old Faithful and sometimes up to Kepler Falls, with stops at Black Sand and Biscuit basins if the clientele is interested and not exhausted. We were lucky, we didn't see much wildlife other than a photographically highly cooperative coyote on the outbound trip but voilà, this dude was hunting across the river (see also my post, Madison Muts). We watched for over an hour but no birds came by so we didn't get to see it hunt, but many, many people did see bob cats hunting in January and February this year, as last year and the year before. The cats blend back into the background by the end of February as far as I can tell.
