Being a little doddering myself ;-) here are some ideas. But before you head off, be sure you are bear aware, and understand safety in bear country. If you are hiking all together, make noise as you hike. Loud conversation is easiest, yelling children are excellent, and yelling YO!! BEAR!! and clapping hands or blowing a police whistle as the group approaches blind curves and thick vegetation will alert bears of your presence so you don't surprise them and to give them time to vamoose and avoid confrontation.

If only a couple of people hike together, carrying and knowing how to use bear spray is a must. You can get it at the Yellowstone Forever store in Gardiner, and in other gateway stores and whichever general stores still open in the park (probably Mammoth). You cannot fly home with it, but you can donate an unused can to a ranger or another hiker on your way out.

We've seen bears from the trail, but never had one approach or do anything other than depart when it became aware of us.

This is a Yellowstone black bear along the side of the road that ignored the small crowd of people photographing it from a respectful distance.
