Linda,

You are not accessing backcountry trip reports. What you are reading are reports of wildlife sightings from the roadside.

If all you are planning to do is cruise the road system and use the pullouts to observe and photograph wildlife, you do not need bear spray (unless you are in close proximity to a grizzly along the side of the road, which would be illegal).

For those that venture into the backcountry on established hiking trails in Yellowstone, there are a number of very popular trails that get so much traffic that some folks don't carry pepper spray. Even on those trails, I still carry a canister, erring on the side of personal safety.

You will be safe and secure on the roadside, excepting the risk from inattentive drivers, who are gawking at critters, and not paying attention to the road!
