First question is, when are you going? If this summer, your options are already going to be somewhat limited, if next year, it's never too early to plan!

Second question: are you looking for lodging, or are you camping? If you're camping, tent, or hard-sided? Try the campgrounds within the park - some take reservations, some are first-come, first served (see link below)

If lodging, if you can get into one of Yellowstone National Park Lodge's (aka Xanterra's) properties in the park, that's ideal - cuts down your commute time to the features you want to see. Tell us what your priorities are - wildlife, hiking, geology-thermal features, history, scenery, etc. - and we can give better advice as to which park facilities might best suit your needs. If you're staying enough days, one suggestion is always to split your lodging between more than one Yellowstone site, different parts of the park offer different experiences, so staying in Old Faithful will offer different close-by activities than staying at Roosevelt Lodge or Canyon on the other side of the park, just as examples.

Photo is of the cabins at Roosevelt Lodge, on the east side of the park - one of the best places for seeing wildlife!

If you can't get into one of the in-park cabins, hotels, or campgrounds, there are gateway towns at West Entrance (West Yellowstone), North Entrance (Gardiner), Northeast Entrance (Silver Gate and Cooke City) and East Entrance (Pahaska Tepee and various "resorts" along highway 20 beyond East Entrance. They all offer a variety of options, prices, etc. They also have VRBOs. South entrance is the only one that doesn't have lodging within a reasonable distance for a daily commute to the park's most interesting features (Headwaters Lodge & Cabins is too far).
