Wild Flax is found in dry, rocky soil, but never in any great quantity. The rather numerous flowers are located on very slender stems which bend and bow to every passing breeze. The 5 blue petals are extremely fragile and will fall off at the slightest handling. Unthinking flower pickers will be sadly disappointed five minutes after plucking a handful of these delicate plants. The blossoms open early in the forenoon and usually close in the late afternoon. Seeds are formed in small, hard capsules which split open late in the fall. {Plants of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks by Richard J. Shaw pg 134}
