My notes--"Passed 6 small lakes with lily pads on within the 1st mile. Then we hiked 3 more miles of boring burned forest with young trees about 10 ft. tall. Made noises and carried bear spary." So I would guess they were going single file and possibly all four not immediately behind each other. It would be hard to see a bear very far ahead or to side while hiking in this type of new growth.
