"Shootings aside, park bison biologist Rick Wallen said that it is normal for bison to die of natural causes at this time of year so carcasses near the road don't normally raise a red flag. After a hard winter, the animals are living mostly off their own protein reserves. Sometimes, as their bodies shift back to getting energy from forage, they run out of energy."
"Wallen said 50 percent of the herd's winter die-off happens between now and the end of April."
