SY,
These must have been survivors of Jim Jones' Jamestown, the Heaven's Gate crazies, or the Branch Davidian complex near Waco. For that many people to simultaneously think that the Slough Creek area is at or around 5,000 feet elevation bespeaks some sort of pathological group mind meld. Then, to risk their lives by trying to build a makeshift raft to cross the creek during spring flood, these people had to have a communal screw loose. With their obvious lack of familiarity with how to ascertain elevation, maybe they spent too much time at an extremely high elevation, and suffered hypoxia. Way strange!
