all of a sudden we heard all kinds of crashing and cracking of branches, then a small but thundering herd of elk cows suddenly splooshed across the river en masse. The sound was quite amazing; it was never deep enough that they had to swim, they just sort of pranced across. By the time we got a good sightline, there was only one elk left, hurrying after her sisters that were already deep in the woods.
Those white blobs in the woods are snow.
