June 15

The drama began the next morning as we were eating in the motel breakfast nook. I got a text from my sister saying that my mom's flight out of Dayton was going to be delayed and it was unlikely that she would make her connection in Minneapolis. Nothing was definite yet, but it was sounding like the best they could do would be to get her to Billings late that night (like, 10 p.m. late) or the next morning.

Um, yeah, that would be a problem. After picking her up in Billings the plan had been to continue west to Bozeman, where we would spend the night after visiting the Museum of the Rockies. Then we'd be up early the next morning to explore an area south of Bozeman (Hyalite Canyon) for a few hours before heading to Gardiner, where we would be doing a rafting trip at 1:00 that afternoon. Follow all that?

Well, nothing we could do about it in the Gillette motel, so we headed out for Billings in the hopes that Plan A would somehow come together.

We reached Billings several hours later, and while having lunch there got word from Mom that she had indeed missed the connecting flight. She was talking with an airline rep about her options, and she mentioned on the phone that the only other way aside from the 10 p.m. Billings option to get her to Montana that day would be an 11:30 p.m. arrival in Bozeman. Hey, take it, I said, that's where we're staying (Mom never really knows exactly where we're staying when) the night anyway--I'd rather pick her up around midnight and drive 10 minutes back to the motel than have to hang out around Billings all day and then drive all the way to Bozeman in the middle of the night. So while not ideal, at least we had a workable Plan B.
