Playing in the Clark's Fork River?

Just wondering if the Clark's Fork near the Colter Campground is a safe river for our 9 year old to play in? He can swim, but is not very strong. Also do you know if Soda Butte Creek still has fish in it up past Cook City (east)?
We are on our way this weekend to explore Cook City and the Lamar Valley. Sooooo excited!
