I use it when approaching blind corners, deep willows, etc. There's a limit to how much "loud taking" and hand-clapping one can do without physical self-destruction. It does NOT sound like a goose so it's not likely to be mistaken for normal ambient sound. I doubt it's any more likely to inspire bear curiosity than dinner bells would, but it can be heard a lot farther away (as reported by hikers approaching from the opposite direction) but not so far away that anyone is likely to call for helicopter back-up. Likewise I've encountered an on-coming hiker blowing a police whistle which could be heard for a good two or three minutes before we met, so it's probably also more audible to bears than bells.

It's also very light weight and easily accessed hung on a belt loop.

Don't know if it works, which is the good news. With any luck bears hear it and depart before I ever see them.
