Start your day as early as you can; it's sometimes hot in August and the critters may be napping in the shade by mid-day. In the cool hours of the morning they're more likely to be active and visible.

When the afternoon heats up, go take your own nap ;-) and come back out to Lamar around 5:00 or 6:00 for another chance to observe the critters. Summer days are long and the slanting light lasts long into the evening.

Do be aware that fire season will have started by August (and continues at least into mid-September); even if there are no fires in Yellowstone smoke from fires to the west/northwest may affect the atmosphere. But as Hoot says, conditions are random and you are just as likely to get beautiful blue skies.
