I don't think I've ever heard of a spotting scope...assuming that's stronger than binoculars? I might just have to hint about the perfect mother's day gift :).

I have heard of the junior rangers program...for some reason, I always had the impression it was for younger (less experienced) kids. My younger daughter loves reading trail maps and doing this kind of research herself. She often plans our routes and is the one to test her ideas with the rangers in the Whites before we head out (she hasn't let us down yet!)
