Your husband is probably referring to the Bombardiers, which some concessionaires will continue to run. Xanterra, which does the coaches out of Mammoth, with some fanfare deaccessioned all their bombs and they're up for auction this year. Lots of people dearly loved them, but I found them noisy, a rough ride, with small, hard- to-defrost windows, and interior seating was arranged so passengers look at each other, not out the window. However there are tour companies out of West Yellowstone who will still be using them.

This year I did two coach rides, one from Mammoth and one from West Yellowstone, both on Mattracks. Those are quite comfortable, with good viewing out of large windows.

Also being introduced this year by several tour concessions are the low-pressure giant tires. They are surely the quietest (machine noise in Yellowstone is a very big issue) and a more cushioned ride. but most importantly, they are the most fuel-efficient of all the options.
