Fascinating article in recent Science Magazine - July 29,2016 pp434-435. Genome sequencing suggests that two endangered wolf species are coyote hybrids. Furthermore "the endangered red and eastern wolves are not unique lineages with distinct evolutionary histories, but relatively recent hybrids of gray wolves and coyotes". Gray wolves and coyotes split into distinct lineages between 6000 and 117,000 years ago - much more recently than had been previously thought.
