Granite Head,
I was going to post this comment on Flickr, but they won't let me, unless I resgister, so I'm posting the comment here. Hopefully, the image URL I copied and pasted shows the photo here, so you can see the image I am referencing (and others can see it).
That is one of the best examples of filamentous bacteria I have ever seen, quite possibly THE BEST!! When I was wearing the uniform and conducting thermal feature walks at Mammoth, I was always on the lookout for examples of filamentous bacteria, because it plays such a central role in the story of why NASA sent some scientists to Yellowstone to study it, and how it related to the search for extraterrestrial life. The best "stuff" I could find was usually dry remnants in a travertine formation near a platform below the Upper Terrace parking lot. (There was a small colony of living filamentous that came and went frequently beneath the boardwalk, but it was hard to see, and logistically difficult if you had a group of 50-75 visitors.) Any chance this photo was taken over by Canary or Trail Spring?
