Just got back from Yellowstone on Sunday, the heat definitely impacted wildlife.
End of August/early September has always been a tricky time for wildlife spotting for me, but I was surprised by the sheer lack of elk (an animal, I usually have no trouble finding).
During our week in Yellowstone and the Tetons I only spotted 3 female elks (solitary). I was lucky enough to hear the bugle of the bulls, but was unable to track them down.
I did see the bears and wolves in Hayden (thanks to that buffalo carcass) - I'll agree that the parking/traffic for that was pure chaos (saw many a vehicle get stuck).
The buffaloes seemed too hot to move around much, though the pronghorn were out in force.
The saviors of most days were the coyotes, who were out hunting despite the weather.
No moose in the Tetons, but on the way back we saw a large bull and a female in the Bighorn Mountains - huzzah!
Overall, it was a nice time, despite the lack of activity and the heat. I will say the crowds were much more tolerable, and well behaved (I only saw 1 couple that went off the boardwalk).
