Almost all roads in the park are paved and will be cleared of snow by then (EXCEPT Tower Falls to Canyon, otherwise known as Dunraven Pass, isn't scheduled to open until May 25), so except for the occasional freak ice/snow storm at that time of the year, your tires will be on the tarmac, not snow or mud. If the higher elevations get snowed or iced up, they'll close the passes until they melt, which by the third week in May is almost invariably the next day, so you don't have to worry about 4-wheel drive. Unless you have a good deal through a group or your employer (do check, before I retired I'm sure over the years I saved more than a thousand bucks through my employer's contract, which we were explicitly allowed to use for personal as well as business rentals; sometimes the rate was the same but we got free unlimited mileage, which is important to consider out here), it's likely the SUV will be vastly more expensive than a sedan. If I were you I'd go with the car, and wouldn't give the SUV another thought :-)

You're coming at a great time, baby animals will be popping out all over. Black bear cubs-of-the-year, May 19, 2017! Notice, BTW, how green and un-wintery it was by then.
