Granite Head's advise is spot-on. The only thing I would add is, if you can't get in-park lodging/camping reservations for the date you need, keep calling the reservation line to check for cancellations. They happen all the time and you can be lucky enough to get exactly what you are looking for after someone else releases their reservation.
