I learned today that Yellowstone Forever has laid off most of the staff of the Yellowstone Institute and is in serious financial trouble. This is very sad news for those of us who supported the Yellowstone Association for many years and enjoyed and recommended the classes and programs of the Institute.
In my opinion, things started to go downhill with the merger of the Yellowstone Association with the Yellowstone Park Foundation to form Yellowstone Forever. The two organizations were very different in operation and cultures. I never had confidence in the new leadership and was quite troubled by decisions by the president and the board. The closure of the park and subsequent cancellation of Institute programs was the final nail in the coffin of their financial distress.
Cam Sholly, Superintendent of Yellowstone, is confident that the organization will survive in some form but its ability to put together the first-class educational programs as it has in the past, will be hampered by the layoff of the experienced and knowledgeable staff, who will seek work elsewhere.
