The Yellowstone River flows northward from Yellowstone Lake, but before it exits the park near Gardiner, Montana, it flows through the wide and deep Grand Canyon it formed over the millennia.
This photo was taken upstream (to the south) of the Upper Falls, the first of two tall cliffs the river tumbles over on its journey through the canyon.
This bridge over the Yellowstone was named for Hiram Chittenden, whose career spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He engineered major infrastructure in several national parks. In Yellowstone he was responsible for the bridge that now bears his memorial, the Roosevelt Arch at North Entrance, and many park roads, including the vehicle trail to the top of Mount Washburn.
