...it is perfectly reasonable for the people who use the park(s) to bear a little more of the cost of maintenance and improvements. The increases are small (although I haven't done all the percentage calculations on all the different choices) and there haven't been any in 8 years. During those 8 years the cost of running the parks has doubtless increased by more than a few percentage points. At least I hope the park staff is paid more than a couple of percentage points more than they were 8 years ago! Not to mention contractor costs and materials costs, and the increased cost of repairs because they were delayed too long due to lack of funds.
I for one am willing to do my part and pay more for what I value so highly. Yes, my income taxes are supposed to go toward national parks as well, but they disappear into the big pool in Washington. Gate fees at least I know exactly where they're going!
