I can't speak for the ponds on the east side of the road, since I've never gone over there...usually occupied by a grumpy bison or two, and fits my definition of "formation of some kind", but I have walked along the beach to the west and watched little bubblers coming up through the sand. I generally stay off of those as well. They can be slightly warmer than the general vicinity, but how much, I don't know. Maybe BP could take his thermo-reader over there and tell us how warm they are.
I have seen layers of wood chips put down in this area to assist the snowmobilers across this patch, on account of lack of snow.
