Beej,

Sometimes it's gas. Sometimes, it's heat. Sometimes, it's both.

Ironically, I am hiking Avalanche Peak tomorrow, so I will pass right by there. I'll see if I can get some readings. We know there is some big time heat just offshore in Mary Bay. When Lisa Morgan's USGS team and Dave Lovalvo of Eastern Oceanics sampled temperatures by sinking thermistors deep into the mud below Mary Bay, they discovered temperatures above 400F as I remember it.

It's not surprising to hear they put down wood chips around there for over the snow vehicles in winter, after seeing all the other places they wind up doing it.

I'm hoping for decent weather, naturally. There is a 20% chance of thunderstorms in the forecast, and they are predicting hail and heavy rain with them. I was trying to get high magnification photos and videos of an osprey nest near the Lower Falls on Saturday, and the weather collapsed on us. We went south because we saw blue sky down that way. We were wandering off-trail, and got caught by another storm while negotiating a patch of deadfall. There's nothing like hail, lightning, and wet logs to make travel difficult! Of course, Monday, when we were on the other side of the park, we had great weather. (My hope is to return to the canyon tomorrow, after the hike, to try and get osprey chick drama with sun on the nest. That will be after checking temps around Beach Springs, of course. I already checked out the Raytek gun to make sure it is still functional after a five year layoff.)
